On the eve of Ramadan, the Chicago chapter of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) delivered ‘Ramadan Food Baskets’ to tens of refugee families that arrived in Chicago from Burma, Iraq, and Somalia.
Approximately 20 volunteers, including young children wearing yellow ICNA Relief T-Shirts, gathered to share food and general items they collected from the generous Muslim communities of Naperville and Aurora. Before reaching out to the needy families, volunteers made Food Baskets which contained rice, cooking oil, sugar, flou r, lentils, and dates. In addition to Food Baskets, volunteers also made baskets containing general items like tooth paste, shampoo, bathroom tissues, sleepers, laundry detergent, and dish washer. S chool supplies for children were also part of the kits. Each family was provided with one food basket and one basket of general items. Larger families received two or more baskets.
Refugee families were very happy to see the Muslim organization reaching out to help them meet their needs. Muslim families expressed their gratitude as this help would lessen their worries of having food on their table, allowing them to focus more on the spiritual side of Ramadan.
ICNA Relief would like to thank the donors who contributed to this noble cause and to the volunteers who spent long hours in making the baskets and then delivering them to the families. Special thanks to Islamic Foundation’s Refugee Assistance Committee for helping ICNA Relief to identify and reach some of these families. We plan to continue this project th roughout the month of Ramadan to reach out to hundreds of additional refugee and low income families needing our help.
Please donate generously. One Ramadan Food Basket per family costs about $75. Food items including bag of rice, vegetable cooking oil, flour, sugar, lentils, and dates can also be donated.

If you do deeds of charity openly, it is well; but if you bestow it upon needy in secret, it will be even better for you, and it will atone for some of your bad deeds. And God is aware of all that you do --- (Quran - 2:271).
